The New York University Robert I. Grossman School of Medicine was founded in 1841 and the NYU Medical Center includes the Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and the Charles C. Harris Skin and Cancer Pavilion, one of the premier dermatology institutes in the country. The school is affiliated with the NYU Langone Medical Center. NYU is specifically known for its treatment of cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, geriatrics, and rheumatology. NYU School of Medicine is also well-respected for its programs that focus on drug and alcohol abuse and AIDS treatment.
There are currently more than 1,000 faculty members on staff. Aside from a traditional MD degree, there are several joint degree programs that can be completed in just five years. These include a MD/MPH in Health Policy and Management, a MD/MPH in Global Health, a MD/MBA, a MD/MA in Bioethics, and a MD/MSc in Clinical Investigation. The school also has MD/PhD degrees through the MSTP.
The curriculum is comprised of 18 months of basic science instruction and two and a half years of clinical training. The USMLE Step 1 exam is taken after the clerkship year, so students can take electives, conduct research, or participate in rotations. There are also programs like the NYU3T with the New York University College of Nursing and PLACE (Patient-Based Longitudinal Ambulatory Care Experience).
Specialties for students often focus on areas like dermatology, internal medicine, pediatrics, and emergency medicine. Especially dedicated students can take part in the School of Medicine Honors Program, which includes 18 weeks of research and the completion of a thesis. Some NYU medical school students choose to participate in the International Health Program, where they can travel abroad, conduct research, or become involved in public health or clinical education initiatives.
Many NYU medical school students take part in the School of Medicine Student Ambassador program, which works to connect alumni, current students, and prospective students. There are also more than 70 organizations and clubs to join. The topics range from academic and clinical to athletic and special interest groups. Because of the location in New York City, students interested in a wide variety of study options and research facilities should look into the NYU medical school.
