Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) is well known for its work in the fields of internal medicine, pediatrics, and women’s health. It is widely considered one of the top biomedical research schools in the country. The school is affiliated with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, St. Louis Veteran’s Administration Hospital, and the Shriner’s Hospital for Children. WUSM is one of the smaller medical schools with a M.D. student population of nearly 400. There are 2,162 faculty members on campus.
Along with traditional MD degrees, Washington University also offers Ph.D. degrees. Additionally, there are considerably large programs for physical therapy and occupational therapy. Some students choose to complete a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree or a Master of Science in Deaf Education (MSDE) degree through the Program in Audiology and Communication Services. Most of the advanced degrees can be completed in five years. WUSM differs from other medical schools in that students are allowed to choose their own electives as early as their first year. Some of the most popular areas of specialty include emergency medicine, diagnostic radiology, orthopedic surgery, and internal medicine.
During their medical school education, Washington University School of Medicine students are required to complete research projects and take part in clinicals. Grades are issued as pass/fail for first year students and honors/high pass/pass/fail for the following three years. No letter grades are awarded. Students can also take advantage of several top research institutes.
Outside of the classroom and hospital settings, about three quarters of WUSM students participate in clubs and other student-run organizations. These cover a wide array of interests such as the Ballroom Dance Club and the Wilderness Medicine Interest Group. Individuals interested in a more flexible curriculum at a top-ranked medical school should look into Washington University School of Medicine.
